3D Scanning

Lightweight, portable, and highly accurate — our handheld 3D scanners can be deployed on your shop floor, in the field, or at our Derby centre. We use the Creaform HandySCAN to capture high-resolution point cloud data that integrates directly with your design or inspection workflow.

Handheld Metrology

Let our expert team handle your scanning needs using the very latest handheld technologies. We deliver clean, structured data ready for CAD comparison, reverse engineering, or inspection.

CMM Inspection

Our Derby office houses a fully equipped COORD3 CMM, enabling high-precision dimensional inspection for components requiring contact measurement and full GD&T reporting.

Automated Inspection

Need high-throughput inspection? Our Creaform CUBE-R system offers a turnkey solution for automated, multi-part inspection — ideal for volume production and consistent quality control.

* MSL has a number of CMM measurement software solutions to produce full GD & T inspection and SPC reports.

3D Scanning Services

The 3D scanning and probing technology works on complex geometries and highly reflective materials providing engineers with the feedback they need to report manufactured component deviations from the design intent.

On-site & Off-site Metrology

We deliver high-accuracy 3D scanning and measurement services both on the shop floor at your facility and at our dedicated metrology lab in Silverstone. With advanced portable systems from our partners at Creaform and CMMs from Coord-3, our engineers capture precise, repeatable data across a wide range of environments from factory floors to complex assemblies.

Compatible With Your Workflow

We support a wide range of CAD and file formats that help slot straight into your workflow, including STEP, STL, IGES, and native formats like CATIA, NX, and SolidWorks. Whether you’re reverse engineering or validating parts to CAD, we make integration easy.

Traceability

Our process ensures an unbroken chain of custody that allows you to record every step during the manufacturing process including part numbers, measurement information, calibration results, processing operations, and environmental conditions. MSL is a UKAS-accredited, ILAC MRA Calibration Laboratory. Accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, the standard enables MSL to demonstrate competency and valid results, promoting confidence in measurement.

Automated Measurement

Repeatable, scalable, and reliable. Automated Quality Control (AQC) delivers fast, accurate metrology scan data that reduces your production cycle whilst the programmable automation software means there’s no reduction in quality. MSL own and operate a Cube-R automated scanning solution, utilising Fanuc or Universal Robots. It’s ideal for your multi-part or high-volume quality inspection. The programmable automation delivers repeatable results and eliminates the possibility for human error delivering high levels of accuracy and ultimate traceability throughout the process. Using either Creaform’s VxScan-R or Metrolog’s i-Robot we can programme the robotic trajectory and measurement routine directly, using simulation and trajectory planning.

Contract Measurement for Quality Inspection

Our qualified team of engineers operate to the highest industry standards, providing high-quality reports you can rely on with full traceability. Our experience has been gained in almost every manufacturing environment including high-performance areas like Formula 1 and Motorsport. We use the market-leading suite of Creaform 3D scanners to deliver services at your site and the incredibly accurate Coord3 CMMs to complete the inspection of products at our metrology lab based in Derby. All data output is compatible with your workflow, but if there is something specific you need in terms of reporting, data or file format then our engineers can accommodate that too.

Metrology Services at Every Stage of Production

From R&D through to final assembly, outsourced metrology services support every step with precision measurement, helping to accelerate development, reduce waste, and prevent delays caused by uncertainty or non-conformance with accurate and replicable measurement data.

Quality Control & Inspection

Verify component tolerances for quality control against CAD models using CMM inspection services or 3D scanning. Ideal for batch inspection, first article inspection (FAI), or in-process QA.

First Article Inspection (FAI)

Ensure your first manufactured part meets design intent before scaling production with First Article Inspection. We help customers reduce delays and avoid costly rework.

Tool & Die Validation

Validate the dimensional accuracy of tooling, moulds, and dies over time to maintain part consistency and prevent drift.

Jig & Fixture Alignment

Measure and verify the accuracy of jigs, fixtures, and assembly lines to maintain precision across production processes.

Supplier Verification

Use contract measurement to inspect components supplied by third-party vendors and ensure they meet your specifications before assembly or resale.

Deformation or Wear Analysis

Track dimensional changes over time in components that undergo stress or use, to inform maintenance schedules or design improvements.

Root Cause Analysis

When quality issues arise, 3D scanning or CMM data can help isolate where deviations occurred in the manufacturing process — essential for continuous improvement.

R&D and Prototyping Support

Use fast, accurate scanning and probing to inspect early-stage prototypes, helping your design team iterate faster with confidence.

Delays in design or production caused by measurement errors can quickly impact your bottom line. At MSL, our metrology engineers help you identify and resolve technical issues fast — whether that means troubleshooting production problems, validating prototypes, or reverse engineering legacy parts to keep projects moving.

Automated Quality Control | Scanning an F1 Wind Tunnel Model

The video above shows how easy it is for our trained metrology engineers to scan a F1 wind tunnel model using the Creaform Cube-R. This scan replicated the model within a 3D environment with an accuracy of 0.078mm. Thanks to our team, we provided optical metrology services efficiently and cost effective for our client.
