New Creaform White Paper

A new white paper from Creaform highlights how advanced Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is transforming pipeline integrity management by delivering more realistic pressure predictions compared to traditional assessment models.

For years, asset owners have relied on conservative standards such as B31.G to calculate burst pressures. While these methods prioritise safety, they often lead to unnecessary maintenance, higher costs, and avoidable downtime.

Creaform’s research shows that FEA simulations can provide burst pressure values up to 2.5 times higher than conventional methods, thanks to nonlinear elastoplastic analysis that captures true material behaviour, geometry, and loading conditions.

The study compared results across multiple models, from traditional B31.G calculations to advanced FEA, demonstrating that FEA aligns much more closely with real-world burst pressure tests. This means pipeline operators can:

  • Make maintenance decisions based on accurate, detailed analysis

  • Focus resources on critical areas rather than unnecessary repairs

  • Improve risk management and extend asset life

  • Reduce operational downtime and associated costs

Backed by validation against real test data and enhanced by Creaform’s VXintegrity software and 3D scanning technology, the findings confirm that FEA offers a powerful, accessible tool for Level III pipeline assessments.
